If you have been experiencing problems with your computer with a loss in performance or even stability unless you are someone who can repair your own PC, chances are that you feel like your options are limited. Either live with the problems, pay someone to repair the issues for you or simply purchase a new computer.
The last option, purchasing a new computer often times seems to be the most accepted option because, to be honest, who does not want a brand new computer? The truth is that with a little maintenance you can easily keep your PC running like new for years to come without having to rely on such costly options and get a slow computer fix.
One thing you can do to improve your computer speed is to install more RAM into it. RAM is short term memory and allows stored information to be requested much more quickly than it would normally be accessible on the hard drive. The problem with this is you have to pay for memory and you want to avoid that.
Instead of just removing programs and stopping all the resources you can do something else as well to help with system performance.
You can increase the swap file on your hard drive. The swap file is a file that acts as memory on your computers drive and swaps information backwards and forwards from the hard drive to the real memory. The bigger this file size is the better the performance.
This only works up to a certain point and if you make it too big it will actually slow down your PC as your hard drive is constantly being used as a swap file or virtual memory. The ideal size is between 1.5 to 2 times the size of the memory in your PC.
How do I change this?
Go to start and then control panel. Click on the system Icon and then go to the advanced tab. You are going to change all the settings for maximum performance including the graphics settings.
Click on the visual effects tab and go down to where it says performance and then click on adjust for best performance button.
Next go to the advanced tab, go down to where it says virtual memory and click on change. Click on custom Size and set the minimum and maximum size to 1.5 times the size of the ram in your computer.
If the memory in your computer is 2GB you need to set this to 1GB you would set this to 1GB x 1.5 Which is 1.5GB.
Once you have done this save the settings and you will need to restart your computer.
Lastly, the computer registry can cause you numerous problems with PC performance. There are many settings in the registry that determine performance that you cannot change manually. Everything from slow performance to annoying crashes and other problems can be caused by registry errors, incorrect setting and corruption. The easiest way to fix these is to download and run a system and registry scanner. After you have changed the settings above to get a slow computer fix.
